Job Description

Rize is a tech start-up developing climate finance to accelerate the transition to a sustainable and low carbon agriculture.

Today agriculture amounts to up to 25% of global greenhouse gases emissions, while the large-scale adoption of climate friendly practices could turn agricultural soils into one of the largest carbon sinks in the world by withdrawing carbon from the atmosphere.

In this global effort to solve climate change, Rize has pledged to ease the journey of farmers into regenerative agriculture. Rize is simplifying farmers’ access to science and to carbon finance for their climate action.

That is how Rize has developed the first platform worldwide for carbon credits and has already developed a significant network of partners in France (such as farming cooperatives).

The journey to develop carbon finance for agriculture will be filled with plenty of exciting challenges:

  • develop new schemes of carbon finance to ensure that the transition brings more value to the farmers;
  • launch plenty of innovative services to create more value for the ecosystem;
  • going international soon;
  • seek for the best GHG modelling approaches
  • improve our carbon monitoring infrastructure to keep up with the best of science, and include more farming practices

Rize was founded in September 2020 by a team of engineers, and has since grown to a team of 10 people. Now, as the project has gained traction and raised funds, we are creating the dream team to join us in this adventure.

Do you want to be at the heart of a high-impact and meaningful project that will shape the future of agriculture, by working with the best technologies within a high-potential start-up?

Job Description

What you’ll be doing

We are looking for a Carbon Scientist to enrich the scope of farms that can benefit from carbon finance in a wide range of farming practices and support our current Carbon Scientist.

For the first year your objectives are to:

  • Master the sources and sinks of GHG emissions for all major types of agricultural practices (crop, livestock, agroforestry, vineyards,…) and their modelling.
  • Leverage your understanding of GHG emissions in agriculture and our users’ mindsets to improve our communications, and answer technical questions from our stakeholders (farmers, their partners, etc…).
  • Lead Rize’s efforts in setting up new carbon measure tools and models for a wider range of agricultural practices (cropland, livestock, vineyards, agroforestry, …).
  • Support the technical development of these models in France and beyond by linking with appropriate research bodies to access the parameters and necessary databases for the carbon calculations.
  • Redact product briefs and technical specifications for the product team and the engineering team to implement new models.

You will work closely with Samuel, the CPO, and Laurent, our first carbon scientist.

Also, as Rize is a start-up, the internal career evolutions are limitless and you will naturally have plenty of opportunities to work on activities outside of the direct scope of your role.

Place of work

This job can be performed remotely. However, as Rize is based in Paris (our offices are in the Deeptech incubator Agoranov, close to Montparnasse), periodic travel to Paris will be required. In short you get the best of both worlds: The comfort of working remotely from home while getting occasions to have meaningful in-person interactions with the team!

4 great reasons to work with us!

  • You will work in a fast pace environment at the heart of the French tech start-up ecosystem (Rize has joined some of the very best incubators in France and beyond), for an exciting experience and a strong learning curve
  • You will wake up every morning knowing that your work matters
  • You will join a relaxed and growing team, with a true “start-up” spirit: you are not just an employee, but an integral part of the team. Your role, if you accept it, is to use your creativity and your unique skills to shape this collective project
  • We are remote friendly but also love sharing a coffee from time to time

Preferred Experience

Your skills

We are looking for a candidate who has a track record of :

  • Analysing the GHG impact of agriculture at the farm level.
  • Developing or improving GHG tracking models for agriculture.
  • Creating and maintaining relationships with relevant research bodies in Europe and beyond.
  • Clearly communicating with technical and non-technical teams, and writing crystal clear technical specifications.
  • Communicating in an international setup. French and English full business proficiency (more languages are welcome).
  • Working with technical teams, ideally experience with Python, R or another programming language.

We are looking for a candidate with a strong academic background, with a PhD in modeling GHG emissions in agriculture.

Hiring values

We would love to work with people who share our core values:

  • Interest in the impact sector and in climate change;
  • Interest in start-ups and their ecosystem;
  • Digital native, remote friendly;
  • Casual, open-minded and friendly;
  • Intellectual integrity, as we aim for real impact.

Recruitment Process

  • A short screening with the current carbon scientist
  • A technical interview
  • A meeting with Rize founders
  • 2 references check
